Glass Types
There are two types of glass we use.The glass that we namely use in splashbacks and semi frameless shower screens is 6mm toughened clear "Float" glass. With splashbacks most colours aren't affected by the green in the float glass and float glass is cheaper than "Starphire".
Float Glass
6mm clear float glass is the glass that is used basically in all your windows, doors, shower screens in your home. Float glass has a green tinge to it and will have a very predominant effect on lighter clolours. For example if you paint white on piece of float glass it will look like a very pale mint green.
Starphire Glass
6mm "Starphire Glass", starphire has a low iron content which effectively takes the green out of the glass, making it possible to get a true representation of the colour being painted, especially whites & lighter colours.
Toughened Glass
The reason we use toughened glass in splashbacks is that the glass has to be able to withstand the heat coming from the cooktop without cracking. It is an A Grade Saftey Glass hence the use of toughened glass in wet areas for shower screens and windows in bathrooms.
Another of the many advantages of toughened glass is that once you cut holes in glass it creates a weak point in the glass, although not always necessary we recommend that anything that has a power point cut out or a side notch out be toughened, the toughening process also adds strength to the glass, making it 5 times stronger than float glass.
Please see below diagram which contains your typical side & corner notches and powerpoint cut out. If you choose to go under a shaped ragehood we can do a template and cut the glass to suit, as per image below. We are more than happy to discuss what your best option is based on your budget and what your preferences are when we come out to quote the necessary work.
